Artist's Description
In the 1650s, a small fort was erected on a rocky outcrop perched over the sea, next to the heritage of Santa Marta, that formed part of Cascais maritime defences until the 19th century. In 1762-3, the fort was modernized, acquiring the layout that it still partly conserves today. Santa Marta Lighthouse began to operate in 1868, when the Fort was stripped of its military status. It was further transformed in 1908, and the tower was increased by 8 m in height in 1936. The lighthouse was automated in 1981, thus dispensing with the need for a continuous presence of lighthouse keepers.
Lighthouses first began to be installed along the Portuguese coast from the 16th century onwards, commencing with a group of 3 lighthouses. By 1750 there were 5; 13 by 1850; and nearly 50 by 1927 (on the Portuguese mainland and islands) - close to the current number.

I'm happily married and father of one gorgeous boy! I fell in love with TV and movies very early on in my life. Not surprisingly, that dictated my future: I'm a TV producer, journalist and film critic! I've produced several TV shows and I've written movie reviews for several newspapers and...
